How much is available for Literacy Instruction Professional Development?
Section 83 of Assembly Bill (AB) 121 (Chapter 8, Statutes of 2025) appropriated $200 million to support the implementation of California Education Code Section 33319.6, added by Section 15 of the same bill.

Who is eligible to receive Literacy Instruction Professional Development funds?
As defined in California Education Code (EC) Section 33319.6(e), an eligible local educational agency (LEA) means a school district, county office of education, charter school, or state special school.
Pursuant to EC Section 33319.6(d)(1)(A), only LEAs with full-time equivalent certificated staff who provide literacy instruction to pupils in transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, or any of grades 1 to 5, inclusive, as reported in the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System as of October 2025, are eligible to receive funds.

How was the Literacy Instruction Professional Development funding calculated?
Funds are allocated to eligible local educational agencies (LEAs) on an equal amount per full-time equivalent certificated staff basis who teach literacy instruction to pupils in transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, or any of grades 1 to 5, inclusive, as reported in the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System as of October 2025.

When can local educational agencies (LEAs) expect to receive the Literacy Instruction Professional Development funds?
The California Department of Education will release an apportionment of funds, reflecting 100 percent of the allocation for each LEA, in late October 2026.

What is the Standardized Account Code Structure (SACS) code for Literacy Instruction Professional Development?
The SACS Resource Code is 6212 and it will be included in the next SACS release scheduled on August 26, 2026.

How long do I have to spend the funds?
Pursuant to California Education Code Section 33319.6(d)(1)(B), the Literacy Instruction Professional Development funds are available for expenditure from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2030.

How do we apply?
California Education Code Section 33319.6 does not require local educational agencies (LEAs) to submit an application for funding to receive a Literacy Instruction Professional Development allocation. The California Department of Education calculated the allocations for each eligible LEA and posted the allocation schedule on the Literacy Instruction Professional Development Funding Results web page.
