  1. Call to Order
    SMC Chair Honig called the History–Social Science SMC meeting to order at approximately 10 a.m.

  3. Review Public Comments Received During the Second Field Survey of the History–Social Science Framework
    SMC Chair Honig provided an overview of the agenda and stated that the purpose of the meeting was to consider the public comment submitted during the second field survey and determine whether to recommend additional edits to the State Board of Education (SBE). He asked former Commissioner Nancy McTygue, the Executive Director of the California History–Social Science Project, to go over her team’s recommendations on the edits that were submitted as public comment. Those recommendations were provided to the SMC as part of the summary table that was Attachment 1 to the HSS SMC agenda item.

    SMC Chair Honig led the SMC through the comments listed in the summary table. The SMC discussed the comments in chapter order. With each chapter, SMC Chair Honig asked Nancy McTygue to summarize her recommendations and then opened the discussion to Commissioners. Commissioners were invited to suggest modifications to the recommended edits to the framework, which were discussed and recorded by staff.
    Once the SMC had concluded its discussion of the comments in Attachment 1, SMC Chair Honig called for a motion to recommend the edits discussed during the meeting and approved by a consensus of the Subject Matter Committee to the State Board of Education. Commissioner Flores made the motion and Commissioner Wild seconded.

    Once the motion was made and seconded, the SMC took public comment on the motion.

    After public comment the SMC discussed more of the edits, and suggested changes to the passages dealing with the Philippine Campaign in World War II and several other edits. The Commissioners who made and seconded the motion accepted these changes as friendly amendments. The motion was approved unanimously
  4. Public Comment on the History–Social Science Framework

    After completing its action Chair Honig called for public comment. Linda Sax Snaid provided comment. Board member and Commission liaison Sandoval expressed her appreciation to the writers, Commissioners, and public for their contributions before the meeting was adjourned.

    SMC Chair Honig adjourned the meeting at approximately 4 p.m.
The History–Social Science SMC completed its work on March 24th. The second day of the meeting, March 25th was canceled.
