Hello,
My name is Doris McPhee. I currently have an 11th grader at Olive Grove Charter school, in addition to having another child who graduated years ago. I am a huge supporter of Olive Grove as it has allowed my children, and I know many others to thrive in an educational environment that truly meets their needs.

Currently , my son is able to work hard to complete his school work in the mornings and then most days, pursue his passion for mountain biking. He has a 3.8 GPA and works part time at a local bike shop. My son recently completed something called a "double Everest", where he rode his bike the equivalent elevation of Mount Everest .... twice over the course of 48 hours. I do not believe he would be thriving as he is , if attending a traditional school.

In my opinion, providing an option like Olive Grove allows some students to be met in an environment that suits them, while removing the potential drain of energy on the staff at traditional schools who likely would be expending resources and time dealing with students who struggle in that type of school.

The learning environment at the Santa Barbara Olive Grove Center has been enormously welcoming and supportive. Something that is likely much needed for students who have struggled in other situations. There is a strong sense of community at Olive Grove. Being able to participate in art and music classes, field trips , workshops, college visits, awards ceremonies as well as meeting with onsite tutors all foster connection. The staff I have encountered truly care, are dedicated and regularly seek new ways to engage students to create community. My experience with the staff at Olive Grove as well as the school in general, has been extremely positive .
Olive Grove is a special place. To let it dissolve would be a huge disservice to many children, particularly vulnerable children who need our support now more than ever.

Thank you for considering my opinion, Best wishes, Doris McPhee
