2017 PAEMST Secondary Mathematics Awardee

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science (PAEMST) Awardee Andrew Walter.

Andrew Walter

Secondary Mathematics Presidential Award Recipient

"Personally, it means that I am on the right path. Doing what I love and am passionate about what works! Professionally it means I can connect with more people on a bigger scale. It will help me to create positive change on a bigger scale, and ultimately affect the lives of more students. This makes me realize that being dedicated to my profession has been recognized and appreciated. My family has always supported me and this award will show them that hard work does pay off and will be noticed."

Andrew Walter currently serves as a K-12 Mathematics Curriculum Specialist for the Stockton Unified School District Professional Development Center. He previously taught grade ten through twelve Precalculus, AP Calculus, and Financial Algebra 2 at Stagg High School for 26 years.

Andrew keeps his classroom focused on the application of mathematics. His work includes taking time to laugh, build relationships, and challenge students to critically think. Andrew believes that learning cannot occur in a room where students do not trust the teacher.

Andrew was Department Chair for ten years and won several awards including Teacher of the Year for Stagg High, San Joaquin Engineer Council Award, MESA California Advisor of the Year, and the Carlston Family Foundation–Outstanding Teacher of America. He wrote the curriculum for a summer program on aeronautical engineering at the University of the Pacific. Andrew’s passion to work with students and peers drove him to move out of the classroom for half of his day and become the K-12 Mathematics Curriculum Specialist for his district.

Andrew received his Associate of Science degree from Evergreen Valley College, his B.S. in mathematics from the University of the Pacific, and an M.Ed in integrating technology into curriculum from Walden University. Andrew is a National Board Certified Teacher in adolescence and young adulthood/mathematics.
