New Legislation Regarding Ultraprocessed Food


On October 8, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill (AB) 1264 Pupil nutrition: restricted school foods and ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) of concern: prohibition External link opens in new window or tab.. AB 1264 creates a statutory definition of UPFs and implements a phased approach for schools to eliminate UPFs of concern and restricted school foods by July 1, 2029, with full implementation by July 1, 2032.

Webinar Information

In response to this new legislation, on October 27, 2025, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., the Berkeley Food Institute is hosting a webinar entitled Shaping California Policy on UPFs featuring speakers from the California Department of Public Health and University of San Francisco.

This Webinar will:

  • Provide an overview of AB 1264 Pupil nutrition: restricted school foods and UPFs of concern: prohibition and potential implementation strategies.
  • Present the current UPF research and policy approaches to decrease their consumption.
