SubjectCALPADS Update FLASH #177

Updating CALPADS Critical to Enabling Eligible Students to Receive Benefits Under Pandemic-EBT Program

Due to Coronavirus (COVID-19), students who are eligible for Free or Reduced-Price Meals (FRPM) under the National School Lunch Program can receive food benefits under the Pandemic-EBT (P-EBT) program administered by the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) in collaboration with the CDE. Under the P-EBT program, families receive funds per eligible student that can be used on food and groceries.

The families of students who are directly certified for FRPM based on the statewide match conducted through CALPADS, or who are identified as foster based on the statewide match with CDSS, will receive extra food benefits without applying to the P-EBT program. Students who are not directly certified, but who are eligible for FRPM based on a National School Lunch Program (NSLP) application, or who are categorically eligible due to their migrant, or homeless status, may apply for benefits under the P-EBT program, and will be approved if they have been identified as FRPM-eligible in CALPADS.

Students who become newly FRPM-eligible through June 30, 2020 will be eligible for P-EBT benefits, if their FRPM eligibility data has been updated in CALPADS. Therefore, it is critically important for LEAs to continue to update CALPADS with new enrollments and program updates for Migrant (135), Free Meal Program (181), Reduced-Price Meal Program (182), and Homeless (191).

Window Now Open for Charter Schools to Request a Change to Reporting Status – Window Closes May 29, 2020

As announced in Flash #172, charter schools electing to change how they report their data to CALPADS and the California Basic Educational Data System (CBEDS) must update their reporting status via the Charter School Annual Information Update (Update), an online data collection administered by the CDE's Charter Schools Division (CSD). Charter schools are strongly encouraged to log in to the Update, and review their information, including their reporting status, and make updates, as necessary, for the 2020–21 fiscal year. The Update is currently available on the CDE Charter School Annual Information Update web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/ch/csinfosvy.asp, and will close on Friday, May 29, 2020.

The CSD previously sent an email to all charter school administrators with instructions on how to access the Update and retrieve their school's logon PIN. Questions regarding the completion and submission of the Update should be directed to the CSD by phone at
916-322-6029 or by email at charters@cde.ca.gov.
