The 2021 Arts Education Instructional Materials Adoption represents a culminating point in the evolution of arts education in California. The recommendation of instructional materials follows the State Board of Education's adoption of the California Arts Standards for Public Schools, Prekindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Arts Standards) in 2019, and the Arts Education Framework for California Public Schools, Transitional Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Arts Framework) in 2020. The action reflects the fundamental belief that instruction aligned with standards-based arts education provides greater opportunities for students—not only to achieve academic goals, but also to drive engagement, connect parents and community, enhance school culture and climate, and ensure equitable arts learning for all.
